Krispies art

From time to time, I have highlighted various artists who have used cereal as their medium. Some of the creations have been amazing, but few have found a sustained niche in cereal art. Except, perhaps for Jessica Siskin, "Misterkrisp," who has masterfully created almost daily works of art predominately using Rice Krispies for a couple of years now. Her Instagram account has over 54,000 followers, a testament to her take on one of North America's leading treats.

While I have highlighted her work before, what is noteworthy now is the release of Siskin's new book, Treat Yourself, a colorful guide for anyone who wants to make Pinterest-worthy creations to eat or just display. If you want to bring more fun back into cereal, this is definitely one way to do it!

Cereal photos

Over the years I have highlighted certain creatives who have used cereal artistically, either as a medium or as a way to reveal the unique nature of this food and its place in our culture. With the rise of social media, and Instagram in particular, several notable individuals are regularly posting some fascinating photos incorporating cereal.

By far the biggest Instagram account of this genre is @mister_krisp, the work of Jessica Siskin. Almost daily she creates some amazing items in the form of Rice Krispies Treats, molded and colored. Her work is both fun and spectacular.

Another example is @travels_with_cheerios, a less frequent contributor, but nonetheless cerealicious. This is the artistic expression of 15 year-old Emma Wezeman. Mixing the sometimes absurd placement of cheerios with beautiful photography this feed makes for an enjoyable addition to what often ends up as fairly routine from other Instagramers.

Check them out, and let us know of any others that you are aware of.

Cerealism

Every once in awhile I come across some creative individuals who take ubiquitous cereal and turn it into art. Some of it is actually quite good.

The latest is Cerealism (although the name has been used before), the work of photographer Ernie Button. He takes various forms of cereal and using close shots often with vivid backgrounds creates some amazing, and at times surreal, results.

Worth taking a look at!

Cereal by Design

Breakfast can be fun, and a father and mother team, Harry and Joann Margulies, are intent on ensuring that with their website/blog, Cereal by Design. They are not the first to use cereal in art, but they have added a new twist: highlighting examples of how ordinary people can liven up their breakfast bowls with cereal art. Cerealism

Everyone once in a while I come across examples of art utilizing cereal. Recently a reader passed along a link to Cerealism, the work of Michael Albert, a modern pop artist whos work includes collages made from cereal boxes.

Wildly interesting.

Cereal Art

Using cereal in art is a common activity among children and occasionally with more serious artists. There's even a artistic organization called "Cerealart" focused on three-dimensional art that explores "the possibilities presented by consumer culture". While Cerealart doesn't usually actually use cereal as a medium, it can. And a new work, entitled "Breakfast of Champions" by Hank Willis Thomas and Ryan Alexiev, is a mosaic portrait of U.S. President Barack Obama made with a wide variety of cereal pieces.

Cereal Killers

With Halloween this week it is worth noting a creative art project called "Cereal Killers", described as a "spooky, kooky coffin table cartoon art book featuring terrorfying takes on some of your favorite breakfast cereal's" (sic).

Cereal box landscapes

Cereal boxes are an important cultural expression. Canadian artist Gary Michael Dault is building on their significance by painting "1-minute paintings" on cereal boxes, but depicting landscapes. His work is currently being shown in a Halifax art gallery.

Cereal parade

Cereal and children go together. In Green Bay, WI their 2006 Kiddi Karnival Parade featured the theme "Breakfasts on Parade". As part of supervised playground programs children made creative floats based on various cereals.  Sounds like fun!
